Forget the fascinator, the high heels and the airs and graces you might find at Flemington and Randwick. The Alice Springs Camel Cup is something different, unlike any other race meeting you’ll ever experience.
Held annually in Alice Springs, the Cup was the brainchild of two mates way back in the free-spirited year of 1970. They decided the only way to settle an ongoing disagreement was with a race – on camels. And now, almost 50 years later, the Camel Cup is an outback institution, drawing visitors from all over Australia and the world.
With a relaxed dress code, you’ll feel comfortable enough to spend the day in boots to combat the dirt like many locals do. However, if you love dressing up, the Cup still holds a Fashions on the Field event like any other established race – so get creative and be in the running to win some prizes!

The 2017 Camel Cup will be held on July 15th at Noel Fullerton Camel Racing Arena at Blatherskite Park – the only camel racing venue in the southern hemisphere, and right in our backyard!
The event will be run by the Apex Club of Central Australia, and the official website has all the additional information you could need – plus loads of fun photos from previous years! It’s ideal for a fun day out with the family, and the kids will love getting up close and personal with the local camels. Visitors from all over would also be surprised to learn that Australia has the largest wild camel population in the world – so it was only a matter of time before we started racing them!
