Are you visiting WA for a stint and looking for a road trip that gets you close to nature? Then we have just the cruise for you.
South of Perth in the Margaret River Winery region, the Cape to Cape drive from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin offers breath taking coastal views of the Indian Ocean.
The Cape to Cape drive can easily be done in a day, and is a great route to take if you want a relaxed coastal cruise.
Here are the top spots to visit along the way:
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse
Built from limestone and standing at 20 metres high, the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse is positioned at the north westerly point and is a great place to start your road trip. This is also the point where people walking the Cape to Cape Track usually begin, taking anywhere between 5 to 8 days by foot.
Tours of the lighthouse are run daily if you would like to a get a look at the structure from within and there’s also a cottage nearby if you wanted to purchase any snacks for your road trip.
Meelup Beach
Just a short 15 minute drive away, you’ll find the picturesque white stretching sand and blue waters of Meelup Beach. It’s a popular beach destination for families with young kids as the waves are usually calm, which also makes it an ideal area for snorkelling. You can also walk the 3.7km Meelup Reserve Trail, which showcases breath taking views of the area.
Ngilgi Cave
Once you’ve finished enjoying everything Meelup Beach has to offer, your Cape to Cape road trip continues 15 minutes south, down Caves Road to Ngilgi Cave (also known as the Yallingup Cave). The cave is a popular tourist spot, due to its incredible chambers that are filled with spectacular cave crystals, and is also of great significance to the traditional owners of the land- the Wardandi people.
Margaret River Wineries
Continue along Caves Road for 20 minutes and you’ll discover a great range of wineries, breweries and eateries= including the Bootleg Brewery, Cheeky Monkey Brewery & Cidery and the Margaret River Chocolate Company. The Margaret River Wineries is the perfect place to have lunch and enjoy a class of local vino overlooking a beautiful vineyard.
Boranup Karri Forest
The road trip continues 35 minutes south to another spot full of natural wonder, the Boranup Karri Forest. As the name suggests, the forest is full of pale-barked karri trees that can soar to an incredible height of 60 metres – that’s three times the size of the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse!
Cape Leeuwin
Drive an extra 35 minutes south and you’ve finally made it to Cape Leeuwin (the most south westerly point of Australia). You have also driven the cape to cape trip just in time for dinner.
