No visit to Australia is complete without some time spent in Tasmania.
Tasmania is Australia’s only state that is also an island. It’s the perfect getaway, as Tassie is renowned for it’s laid-back pace and friendly locals.
Down Under, Tasmanians are called Apple Eaters but there is much more to Tassie than its apple orchards. It’s a foodie paradise where you’ll find the freshest berries, fruit, dairy, seafood and wine- but it’s also a great place to see a different side to the Australian landscape. With our car hire specials it’s easy to go exploring here, whether you have a weekend or a month to do so.
Start your journey by taking the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport. You can take a car across on the famous ferry, The Spirit of Tasmania, or hire one easily with Sixt once you’re in Tasmania. You can of course fly from Victoria to Tasmania, but visitors much prefer the experience of taking either the daytime ferry or the overnight option.
Start with a side trip westward along the coast to Penguin, home of the Big Penguin and a big Sunday market. Continue on to Stanley and brave its chairlift up the volcanic plug known as The Nut.
Back in Devonport, head south to Latrobe with its Platypus Interpretation Centre. Near Deloraine, visit the caves of the Mole Creek Karst National Park, the Tasmanian Devils of the Trowunna Wildlife Park and the Big Wickets in Westbury. Sample the wines of the Launceston area and then head south through quaint little villages and fertile farmland to Hobart, the state capital.
Historic Hobart, the second oldest city in Australia, has plenty of attractions but one not to miss is the famous Salamanca Market. This is the perfect place to sample Tassie’s many taste-explosions and culinary delights. Then head to Kettering, the D’entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island for some fishing and boat trips along the coast- not to mention some very fine dining.
Next up are the orchards of the Huon River Valley. Nearby attractions like the Tasmanian Appleheads and Model Village in Glen Huon, the Tahune Forest Airwalk and the thermal pools of the Hastings Cave State Reserve should definitely be on your “must see” list.
Because distances in Tasmania are relatively small, one of our medium sized SUVs are the perfect way to get around. Just be sure to leave enough space among your luggage for all those delectable local goodies you’ll be stocking up on.
