Barcelona is known worldwide for its stunning neo-gothic Basilica de la Sagrada Familia church. While you're in that part of the city, you can also visit the Gothic Quarter with parts of its Roman-era buildings still intact. Then take your hire car up to the hilltop area of Montjuïc, where you'll find a fortress from where you can take in some spectacular Mediterranean views.

It goes without saying that Barcelona is one of the best cities to visit in Europe practically year round. In summer the days are extremely hot but to be expected and as such the city knows how to make the best of it. Being by the sea one of the most obvious choices is to head to the beach, and a hired SUV could be perfect for that especially if public transport is sweltering and crowded. Other things to consider are the Open-Air Cinemas, such as Cinema Lliure - a free Indy event that takes place on the beach. The Grec Festival takes place each summer, which is a series of performances in an amphitheatre built into the side of Montjuïc. At night the city boasts its incredible bar and market scene and in August when many of the locals are on holiday is when the popular series of street parties called The Festa Major de Gràcia takes place.
