If you really want to see the best of Crete, including its most beautiful beaches, car hire in Chania is a must. The island's main towns and most popular resorts are all well connected by road, including the A75 Highway which runs along the north-east coast close to Chania. Road signs are in Greek and English and UK visitors should note that Cretans drive on the right. Petrol stations tend to close by around 09:00 p.m. and are located about 30 miles apart on the European Highway (E75).
Considered the most beautiful town on Crete, Chania is known for its Venetian and Turkish architecture, its vibrant waterfront restaurants, bars, and cafes, and its glorious 14th century Venetian Harbour. Try the Firka Fortress and Maritime Museum for scenic views of the harbour and the 16th century Venetian Lighthouse. Modified by the Egyptians in 1839, the lighthouse is one of the city's most famous landmarks. Take a short drive to the Venizelos Tombs or spend the day shopping and relaxing. Be sure to visit Skridlof, a street that is entirely devoted to leather products for good quality jackets, handbags, wallets, and belts. The newer part of town is home to the city's university and you'll also find some great indie stores and boutiques.
While the city is a joy to explore, you'll find some of the best attractions a little further afield. Samaria Gorge was designated a Greek National Park in 1962 and it is the longest gorge in Europe at 11.18 miles. It's popular with hikers and is home to a protected species of goat as well as hundreds of plants, insects and birds. If you're not the energetic type, head for Agia Roumeli at the end of the gorge for crystal clear, turquoise waters and fabulous scenery.
The drive to Falassarna Beach near Kissamos is well worth the effort. One of the island's most beautiful beaches, it is surrounded by olive groves and shrubs. The sugary soft sand extends all the way around the picturesque bay and you can swim in warm, azure waters, top up your tan or linger over lunch in a friendly seafront taverna.

The Botanical Park Of Crete lies at the foot of the White Mountains and it's one of the island's more recent attractions. Over 20 hectares is filled with fruit trees, herbs, and medicinal plants which thrive in the warm, Mediterranean climate. It's also home to animals, birds and insects and a lone, charred centennial olive that marks the devastating fire of 2003.
Tourism is the biggest industry in Chania but that doesn't mean that the city doesn't its fair share of business travellers. Many of the town's major hotels offer conference and meeting facilities and are within easy reach of our car rental in Chania branches. The Liberty Hotel is just an example with a theatre that can sit up to 70.
