We always advise our customers to avoid driving between dusk and dawn outside the city, as there is lots of wildlife about and animal damage is not covered by SIXT's Damage Recovery Fees (except when driving within the Uluru Township and Kata Tjuta National Park area).
If you wish to set off along the Larapinta and Namatjira Drive (also known as the Mereenie Loop), you should note that you can only travel along this road with a High Clearance 4WD. You will need a permit to travel along it, which can be obtained from the Central Land Council in Alice Springs or the Kings Canyon Resort.
There are a few roads around Central Australia that can only be travelled on with permission from SIXT, and if you are travelling with another vehicle. These roads include Tanami Track, Gunbarrell Highway, Plenty/Donahue Highway, Canning Stock Route, Oodnadatta Track, Strezlecki track and Birdsville Track.

The town of Alice Springs has its own unique charm. It is only about 15 minutes by car to the airport, with plenty of landmarks and sites to see within the same area. On your drive from the airport into town, you must visit the infamous ‘Welcome to Alice Springs’ sign to snap a quick picture. From here, the town is easy to navigate, with several lovely cafes and restaurants and perfect for an afternoon wander. There are also plenty of day hikes and lookout areas a short distance away, such as the MacDonnell Ranges or Standley Chasm.

The Northern Territory is what so many people picture when they think of Australia and the country’s vast, incredible red centre. For many, driving these roads are a must-do activity - but before you pick up your Alice Springs hire car, there are some things you will need to know about driving in the NT.
It goes without saying that the distance between camps, landmarks and towns in the Northern Territory is huge. Often, it takes more than 5 hours between places. It is important that you plot out your route and stick with it as you must try to avoid driving in the dark. This is simply because of the risk of wildlife - camels, kangaroos, cattle and horses all roam freely out here and can be a hazard if you are driving at night.
Another thing to bear in mind is your fuel! Gas prices in the Northern Territory are unfortunately at a premium, so you will want to drive as economically as possible. You will also always want to note how much fuel you have in the tank. Service stations can certainly become few and far between! To make this a little easier, check out the economic, fuel-efficient and hybrid cars available to hire in Alice Springs with SIXT. Or, for further information, get in touch with a member of our team.
This epic adventure cuts through the heart of Australia and the deep red centre. There is so much more to the outback than just Uluru!! Even though this is an incredible sight to see, if this isn’t your first time in the Northern Territory, you might be looking for something a little more off the beaten path. Check out the Lasseter Highway, which will take you through Curtain Springs, and knot Kata Tjuta. Alternatively, you can head along Ernest Giles Road to camp at the famous Kings Creek Station, visiting Watarrka National Park & Kings Canyon,
